Awake to a rainforest downpour and watch the unveiling of a majestic show as mountain ranges mysteriously reveal themselves through thick morning mist. Amble through orchards, select plump guava and passionfruit for breakfast, or feast on mango in a flower-forested butterfly garden - this is the tempo of Bali Hai, located at the foothills of Mossman Gorge.

Amid surround of luxury and comfort, Bali Hai is completely in tune with nature. Remote yet accessible, the retreat consists of four pavilion-style dwellings set on 12ha, including 5 hectares of rolling lawn and gardens fringed by rainforest and rugged mountain ranges.

Against the green landscape, the contrasting sky seems unnaturally blue, and the ever-clustering cloud, like ice-creams, perched atop dramatic cliffs in the distance. The scene seems more reminiscent of an African jungle than the Australian tropics.

Designed by Chris Van Dyke, Bali Hai reflects the years of travel experiences of owners Wendy and Hans van der Wolf. From the thatched ylang ylang roofing, to the overturned Javanese field ploughs used as sun lounges, the couple have taken the best of their adventures and brought them home to share with guests.

Centred around a main open-plan bungalow housing the kitchen, a sheltered patio, living area and swimming pool, the three detached pavilions sleep up to eight guests.

Continuing the recumbent theme are outdoor hammocks, an intricately carved Indonesian day bed draped in muslin, and large plunge baths designed to be filled to the brim and scattered with frangipani. "They are strategically placed so guests can soak while taking in views of the creek below", says Wendy.

With the nearest neighbour a secluded two kilometres away, the only prying eyes come from cheeky sunbirds nesting in the thatch. As a result, a bush shower in the gorgeous wilderness is very inviting.
