Fancy our own five-star chef and private concierge these holidays? Backing straight onto one of Australia’s top five beaches, the Dune Port Douglas villa is available this Christmas for $5000 a night including staff.

For the Melbourne businessman who owns this four-year-old, 745-square-metre, single-level home fronting Four Mile Beach in Port Douglas, the open-air passages that separate the interconnecting pavilions is fundamental.

WE drove through the gates onto a driveway that twisted and turned its way through a mango and coconut grove for at least half a kilometre. Along sugarcane fields and banana plantations, our journey had led us to a hidden little lane in the Whyanbeel Valley where we would find Shangri La.
