Fishing on the Great Barrier Reef & Daintree River

If you love fishing you will love what our area has to offer from a royal battle with a Barramundi and the area’s big game reef fishing to fly and lure fishing in the local rivers and estuaries.

The Daintree River and its mouth provides both fresh and saltwater fishing – ideal conditions for the individualist Barramundi – and this tropical destination hosts a wide range of freshwater fish with more than a third of Australia’s species recorded here. Apart from Barra, some freshwater fish here include Archerfish, Perch, Catfish Bream and freshwater crayfish.

Seasonal reef fishing is another attractive option with inner reef fishing between June and October and fishing beyond the reef from November to March. The Black Marlin season attracts fishermen from all over the world during the season from September to December but of course there are many other varieties including Spanish Mackerel, Coral Trout, Yellowfin Tuna, Trevally, Wahoo and Mahi Mahi. Crabs are a great speciality of the area with mudcrabs from the mangrove swamps as well as crabs, shrimps and crayfish in the reef waters.

Individual and group fishing expeditions are easily arranged to cater for your tastes from a few hours’ duration to full day expeditions and longer if you desire.
