Bird Watching

Date Posted: November 14, 2022

Nearly half of all Australian bird species call Tropical North Queensland home, so why not call in for a visit!

Nestled away amongst the diverse flora of Far North Queensland are over 440 bird species recorded to the region. Furthermore, there are many distinct sub-species to the region just waiting to be spotted in action.

As to be expected there are certain times of the year where migratory species can be seen; however, good birding is year-round in the Tropical North. No bird watching visit would be complete without a trip to Mount Lewis in Julatten where it is possible that 12 out of the 13 Wet Tropics endemics can be observed. Mount Lewis is located on the hinterland behind Port Douglas, approximately a 40-minute drive from Port Douglas and Newell Beach respectively.
